STAFF REPORT
The 0-fer is over.
The Central boys swimming team had never won a first-round outing in the NJSIAA tournament, but all that changed
on Tuesday afternoon at Ocean County College.
The Golden Eagles, the No. 2 seed, hosted and defeated No. 7 Kingsway, 122-48, in a Public South B quarterfinal
meet.
"We really didn't know what they had," Central coach Steve Stout said. "We went out there with a
pretty decent lineup."
The meet sheet members delivered first-place points in 10 of the 11 events and Andrew Coslow led the team with
two individual victories. The rest of the gang included Brett Daroci, Brian Mahoney, Eric Denver, Eric Haug and
Ryan Lustig as they each generated an individual win.
Coslow recorded times of 1:57.3 in the 200 freestyle and 5:37.61 in the 500 free. Mahoney's victory was in the
200 individual medley (2:13.98), Denver was victorious in the 100 butterfly (1:02.22) and Lusting was in the winning
lane in the 100 backstroke (1:02.77).
Daroci normally swims the 100 free but with the meet heavily in Central's favor at that point, Stout decided to
give Daroci the night off from the event. With Daroci taking a pass, Haug took command with his win in a time of
56.17. Daroci still swam the 50 free and clocked a winning time of 22.81.
"Once we saw how the meet was progressing, we decided to give some of the younger kids the experience of swimming
in a state meet," Stout said. "Getting our freshmen and sophomores in the meet was important because
they are our future."
