Great Cheasapeake Bay Liz Schlicher

Mountain Lakes grad wins Great Cheasapeake Bay Swim Former Mountain Lakes swimming standout Elizabeth Schlicher was fastest to the finish among the females in the 2007 Great Chesapeake Bay Swim. Schlicher was among 650 swimmers who jumped into the waters alongside the Bay Bridge on Sunday morning in Sandy Point, MD for the event. Schlicher, a 25-year old who graduated from John Hopkins University where she competed for the Blue Jays, now resides in Baltimore, MD, was the first of 196 females to complete the 4.4 mile race that draws swimmers of all skill levels. The biggest danger usually isn't the water or currents; it's the flailing arms and legs from the mass of people. The former Lady Laker was clocked in 1:33:20. Schlicher, who was has been training for years after beginning her swimming career in the Hub Lakes competition, said, ""I just swim a lot in the mornings before work." She added, "It's a great race across the bay and last year I was fourth out of the women and this year I won." "For safety, we keep the number of swimmers to 650, 'cause we have 650 volunteers and 100 boats as our safety fleet," said Chuck Nabit, the event director. Volunteers in kayaks help guide the swimmers and watch for swimmers in need.
