| Mainland Regional won the inaugural Cape-Atlantic Girls Swimming League last
winter with a 7-0 mark, and the Mustangs should be even stronger this year. Mainland was 12-1 in 2004-2005, losing
only to powerful Vineland 108-62 in the South Jersey Public A championship meet. |
| Mainland's Joanna Thomas, then a freshman, earned The Press Girls Swimmer
of the Year award. Thomas won the 500-yard freestyle at the State Individual Swimming Championships in March, and
she set a national girls public school 500-meter record of 5 minutes, 29.07 seconds at midseason. Joining Thomas
are Stacey Rahter, a Press first-team all-star, and a solid lineup that includes Molly McGroarty, Maureen Altobelli,
Colleen McGroarty, Colleen McClintock and Katie Bergen. Divers are Carissa Santoro, Catherine Tobiason and Amy
Fein. |
| Holy Spirit (7-2) lost no seniors from a team that advanced
to the state Non-Public A semifinal last season. Kate Merz, Beth Mooney, Ali Funk and Erin Cawley, all non-seniors,
lead the Spartans. Seniors are Heather Brown, Katy Mason, Caitlin McCusker, Samantha Morrison and diver Marykate
McPherson. |
| Renee Tomlin, a two-year Press all-star, is back for Ocean City (7-3), a
team that lost to Haddonfield 87-83 in the South Jersey Public B final last winter. Sam King, Colleen Smith, Kelsey
Levering, Liz Muller, Liz Canderan, Suzanne Mooney, Anesa Dilbrovic and diver Alex Coletta help make O.C. a strong
team. |
| Sarah Czar, a Press first-team all-star, will help the new Egg Harbor Township
girls team to have immediate success. The lineup is strong with all-around swimmers Jessica Balance, Paige Howarth
and Leah Varvaro back, and Laura Castello is a good distance swimmer. Kristi MacKain will add points. Two freshman
prospects are Emily Czar and Mackenzie Howarth. |
| Wildwood Catholic (3-4) has distance swimmer Victoria Lederer, along with
Samantha Smyth, Marina Wescott, Leah Kasantis and Abby Minark. |
| Our Lady of Mercy Academy (3-6) features sprinter Emily Fralinger, plus Carolyn
Quinn, Maria Bowe, Jen Dean, Caitlin Hess and Gateway Regional transfer Michelle Wesh. |
| Sophomore Jill Smaniotto, a Press first-team all-star last year, tops Millville
(3-6). Michelle Wilson and Brittany Bybel are good scorers for the Thunderbolts. Traci Hofer, Sara Nolter and Jill
Smith, and freshman Erin Murowany and Sarah Mortensen will help. |
| The other new girls team is Oakcrest, which has a large group of about 40.
Erin Palermo and Krista Jensen are distance freestylers, while Diana Cappelluti does the breaststroke and Caitlin
Kasper is a diver. |
| Atlantic City (2-8) returns sprint freestylers Gigi Guida and Erica Kostrub
and diver Morgan Miller. Others are Jackie Argus, Amanda Cherry, Emily Hutchinson and Jolea Russoto. |
| Absegami (1-7), which doesn't have its own pool, has had trouble getting
practice time. Laura Bassford is a good scorer for the Braves, who also have Kathy Shiao, Morgan Matalucci and
Sharon Buckalew. Divers are Erinn Wescoat and Ashley Kirschmann. |
